At Regional Climate Weeks

The Regional Climate Weeks (RCWs) inspire individuals and organisations to become part of the momentum created by the global climate agreement in Paris. It is a unique collaborative platform where both governments and non-governmental organisations stakeholders gather to address the gamut of relevant climate issues under one umbrella. Bringing together diverse stakeholders in the public and private sectors around a common goal of addressing climate change, is the main goal of the RCWs.

Every year, RCWs are held across the following regions: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Northern Africa.

2023 Regional Climate Weeks

Africa Climate Week I 4 – 8 September I Nairobi, Kenya

Shared insights at partner events on:

  • Accelerating Decarbonisation in African Logistics: The Role of Private Sector Collaboration – organised by Kühne Foundation and SFC
  • Sustainable cities, thriving communities: transforming African cities through climate action – organised by UN-Habitat, UNEP, with ICLEI, UIC, and UITP

Collaborated with UNEP on events, on the following issues:

  • Connecting informal transport to the climate agenda – organised by WRI, with Climate Champions Team, GNPT, SLOCAT, TUMI, and World Bank
  • Achieving a decarbonised and resilient infrastructure system in Africa: the role of transport – organised byUNEP, with SLOCAT, and ITF
Middle East and North Africa Climate Week I 9-12 October I Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

  • Accelerating adaptation and resilience for land transportation infrastructure: An Industry Roundtable – hosted by Saudi Arabia, the Climate Champions Team (CCT), together with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI)
Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week I 23-27 October I Panama City, Panama

MENA Climate Week I 28 – 31 March I Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Collaborated with UNEP on events, on the following issues:

Shared insights at partner events on:

  • How transport contributes to climate mainstreaming for a green economic recovery in the Arab Region (organised by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and IsDB).
  • MENA region’s transport development (organised by the Africa Network for Walking and Cycling).
Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week I 18 – 22 July I Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Cooperation with EUROCLIMA+, MobiliseYourCity and the Global Partnership for Informal Transportation (GPIT) on:

  • Enhancing coherence of NDCs and national and subnational transport plans;
  • Informal transport’s role in the Race to Zero in Africa and LAC.
Week for Sustainable Mobility and Climate I 4 – 6 October I Dakar, Senegal
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
  • Participation in the Regional Cooperation Mechanism on Low Carbon Transport: South and Southwest Asia and Southeast Asia Subregional Consultation and Capacity Building Workshop.

2021 Regional Climate Weeks

Latin America and the Caribbeans Regional Climate Week I 11-14 May

SLOCAT, in partnership with EUROCLIMA+ and the regional urban mobility community of practice, contributed to the transport and mobility programme organised by UNEP and highlighted best practices in local and national governance, active mobility and urban freight. The SLOCAT secretariat contributed as keynote speaker, moderator and panellist.

Asia Pacific Climate Week I 6 – 9 July

SLOCAT co-organised three official thematic sessions with UNEP, NDC Transport Initiative for Asia (NDC-TIA), Asia LEDS Partnership and others, which featured many SLOCAT partners and their works to explore the policy, technical and fiscal measures needed to accelerate the transition to sustainable, low carbon mobility in Asia-Pacific.

SLOCAT also co-organised a side event on small island states with the Asia LEDS Partnership and discussed the challenges in tracking sustainable transport trends in the region at the Session on Behaviour Change and Technology Development.

Africa Climate Week I 26 – 29 September

SLOCAT, under the lead of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), co-organised three official thematic sessions with the Transport Decarbonisation Alliance (TDA), New Horizons Women’s Education Centre and WRI Africa to explore the following issues:

  • Transport and climate action outlook to 2050,
  • Policies for behaviour change and technology development, and
  • Financing the shift to sustainable, low and zero emissions mobility.

SLOCAT led the Implementation Lab on Transport with ITF and presented the Africa section of the SLOCAT Global Status Report on Transport and Climate Change – 2nd edition at a side event organised by Climate Chance.

Africa Climate Week I 18 – 22 March I Accra, Ghana
  • Organised various technology, policy and finance sessions with CCAC, ICLEI, ITDP, REN21, UN-Habitat
Latin America & Caribbean Climate Week I 19 – 23 August I Salvador, Brazil
  • Co-led Transport thematic block with UN Environment, GIZ, EUROCLIMA+ Programme, C40 and LEDS LAC
  • Supported Cities thematic block with WWF, Global ABC, GCoM, CAF, Regions4, UNEP, WMO and ICLEI
  • Organised Workshop on Urban Mobility in the Next Generation of NDCs with EuroClima+, GIZ and AFD
Asia-Pacific Climate Week I 2-6 September I Bangkok, Thailand
  • Co-led Transport thematic block with CDP Worldwide, ITDP, UNDP, UNESCAP, UNOPS, and WRI
