UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres receives Warsaw Statement on Low Carbon Transport and Sustainable Development

20 November 2013, Warsaw

Today, representatives of the Transport Day 2013 organizers; the SLoCaT Partnership and the Bridging the Gap initiative met with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres to hand over the outcome document of Transport Day 2013 "Warsaw Statement on Low Carbon Transport and Sustainable Development" which was endorsed by more than 150 organizations and 450 individuals.

Christiana Figueres praised the SLoCaT Partnership and the sustainable transport community for taking the initiative to bring together sustainable transport stakeholders in support of negotiations on climate change and sustainable development.  She emphasised the importance of starting paralel processes resulting in concrete action while waiting for the governments to agree on a long-term climate agreement.  She encouraged the transport community to be a part of the Climate Summit which will be organized by the United Nations Secretary General and his climate team in September 2014, in New York, United States.

Christiana Figueres happily accepted the Transport Day 2013 Scarf which was presented her, saying it has become an highly recognized symbol of sustainable transport by the COP 19 participants in Warsaw.

Speaking on behalf of the SLoCaT Partnership Michael Replogle from the Institute for Transportation Development Policy (ITDP) and Holger Dalkmann from EMBARQ/ World Resouces Institute expressed the readiness of the SLoCaT Partnership to work with the UNFCCC Secretariat and the ADP working group on demonstrating the mitigation potential of the transport sector. They also invited the UNFCCC Executive Secretary to Transport Day 2014 in Lima, Peru.

The SLoCaT Partnership was also represented by Hilda Martinez from CTS EMBARQ Mexico and Talya Enriquez Romano from the SLoCaT Partnership Secretariat.
