“Transportation and mobility are central to sustainable development”. This statement The Future We Want, the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development-Rio+20, reconfirms the critical role of sustainable transportation in development.

The importance of sustainable transportation at the Rio+20 Conference was further highlighted by the voluntary commitment for more sustainable transport delivered by the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), together with 16 other Voluntary Commitments on Sustainable Transport covering knowledge management, capacity building and policy formulation.
The Dutch government in partnership with SLoCaT consider it important to take stock of relevant follow-up efforts since the Rio+20 meeting , and would like to contribute towards developing a meaningful strategy for continued action on sustainable transport in the context of sustainable development.

The meeting brought together representatives from MDBs with a selected number of experts within the sustainable development and transport sector. The Netherlands has a great expertise in logistics and multi-modal transport systems. The meeting offered a variety of organizations specialized in sustainable transport as well as some specific countries to engage with MDBs leading experts on sustainable transport.
