Carnegie Endowment for international Peace Outreach meeting on Sustainable Mobility on the Road to Rio+20

15 March 2012 @ 9:00 am

The UN General-Secretary’s new 5-Year Action Agenda identifies sustainable transport as one of 5 building blocks of sustainable development. Yet transport is virtually invisible in the initial framing of Rio+20, the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. A growing number of multilateral development banks, bilateral development agencies, NGOs, and private sector actors, among others, are developing their own commitments to recognize and implement sustainable transport. Together, they hope to garner additional commitments for sustainable transport from governments in the context of Rio+20.

What are the prospects for putting sustainable transport on the agenda at Rio in June 2012 and in its follow-up? How can the United States best promote sustainable transport internationally given unfolding domestic policy and political challenges? What commitments for sustainable transportation could emerge from Rio+20? What can be done by civil society, business, governments, and finance institutions between now and June to ensure a successful global conference that includes sustainable transport?

Speakers: Daniel Sperling, Elizabeth Thompson, Michael Replogle, Polly Trottenberg, Gordon Feller, Peter Lehner, Marc Juhel, Lawrence GumbinerCornie Huizenga
