Equitable Urban Mobility – Supporting the Empowerment of Women and Girls

The fifty-eighth session of the “Commission on the Status of Women” will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 10 to 21 March 2014.  Representatives of Member States, UN entities and ECOSOC-accredited NGOs from all regions of the world will be in attendance.   The overall theme of this years event is: Challenges and Achievements in the Implementation of the Millenium Development Goals for Women and Girls. 

During the Commission, UN-Habitat will undertake a side event scheduled for Tuesday the 18th of March 18.30 – 19.45, the draft concept note for which is attached.  The subject of this side event is “Equitable Urban Mobility – Supporting the Empowerment of Women and Girls”, and will focus on the current issues which surround women and mobility with a particular attention to (i) access and (ii) safety.  The eventwill also serve to provide a platform for UN-Habitat partners to share their experiences in the promotion of inclusive urban mobility solutions which drive the accessibility agenda as an effective means of empowerment forwomen and girls.   The event will also aim to produce a statement for the inclusion of indicators and targets on urban sustainable development for the Post 2015 SDGs.
