  • On 22nd of May from 16:00 to 17:30 our Side Event on Financing Climate Change Mitigation in Transport will take place at the annual meeting of the International Transport Forum (ITF) in Leipzig. During the last years many actions in the transport sector, which could have brought significant GHG reductions and positive environmental impacts amongst other co-benefits, have been postponed or cancelled because of a lack of financial resources.

  • Energy use in the transport sector fell from a record high level by almost 5 per cent between 2007 and 2009, and over the following two years energy usage has remained at a relatively constant level (figure), increasing according to preliminary data by 0.1 per cent between 2010 and 2011, writes the European Environment Agency in its annual report on transport and the environment.
  • The CDM Executive Board in its recent 72nd meeting considered a concept note on the challenges and opportunities for standardization and simplification in the context of the transport sector and requested the secretariat to develop guidelines on standardized baselines for the transport sector covering standardization at the following levels: (a) Standardized parameters or approaches that are country- or region-specific;
  • ADB estimates that 80% of Asia's economic growth will be generated in its urban areas, supported by migrants in search of jobs and economic opportunities. Sustainable urban transport solutions are crucial to mitigate the growing congestion and pollution in the region's sprawling urban centers.
  • The European Environment Agency (EEA) released its “Annual Management Plan 2013” outlining the EEA work programme which will address a broad range of issues including: air quality and noise; air pollutant emissions; climate change mitigation; climate change adaptation; energy; and transport.
  • Indonesia submitted the "Sustainable Urban Transport Initiative" as a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) seeking support for implementation. The initiative aims at fostering sustainable urban transport in Indonesian cities through the adoption of measures to stop the increasing motorization in the country and diminish existing externalities of transportation.
  • A report prepared for the Nordic Working Group for Global Climate Negotiations (NOAK) finds that synergies between climate change adaptation and mitigation can foster a more efficient, responsive and comprehensive climate policy.
  • The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a US$87 million grant to support the Government of Mozambique in developing a climate change-resilient economy and to scale-up high impact nutrition interventions. Mozambique's climate change development policy operation aims at supporting policy reforms that enable long-term growth and climate-proof development plans.
