  • The seventh session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from 6-10 January 2014, in New York, US. OWG 7 is expected to discuss: Sustainable cities and human settlements, sustainable transport (2 days); Sustainable consumption and production (including chemicals and waste) (1.5 days); and Climate change and disaster risk reduction (1.5 days).
  • The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) reported on an event held to demonstrate the potential contribution of biofuels to sustainable development. In particular ICRAF emphasized that if greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets are to be met, approximately 26% of transport will need to be powered by biofuels by 2050.
  • The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Symposium on Aviation and Climate Change, 'Destination Green,' aimed to foster a dialogue amongst participants on environment and aviation matters. The event brought together 233 participants from 62 member States and 23 international organizations.
  • The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) has reported on the conclusion of Acclimate, a four-year project dedicated to climate change adaptation. The culmination of the project’s work, a regional strategy for climate change adaption, was adopted by the IOC’s 28th Council of Ministers on 17 January 2013, in the Seychelles.
  • This meeting is sponsored by Fira Barcelona, the International Emissions Trading Association and the World Bank.
  • Nine "Lighthouse Activities" were celebrated at the Doha Climate Change Conference as pioneering initiatives yielding benefits for the urban poor. The activities demonstrated the multiple benefits of addressing climate change through adaptation and mitigation activities, and transforming misperceptions about taking action on climate change.
  • A regional seminar held for South American countries by the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) discussed possible elements for a future Work Plan for the energy efficiency pillar of ECPA, including actions targeting transport, buildings, industry and mining, and possibly using nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) to promote and finance energy efficiency measures.
  • The Fifth Session of the Group of Experts on climate change impacts and adaptation or international transport networks will convene 7 December 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. Items on the provisional agenda include, inter alia: discussion on the Report of the Group of Experts; and Replies to the Questionnaire for collecting information on existing and potential climate change impacts on transport, as well as degree of preparedness and relevant...
  • The workshop examined approaches to ensure that smallholders are not marginalized by increasing biofuel production for aviation. IFAD highlighted a $12 million initiative on research and development of alternative crops for smallholder biofuel production. They also underscored recent research grants that will help to produce biofuels sustainably.
  • The newsletter also highlights next year's fourth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM4), the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative's Global Efficiency Medals competition, the September Women in Clean Energy Symposium, and past stakeholder meetings by several of CEM's initiatives and projects.
