Sustainable Transport Policy

Printer-friendly version

For the first time ever the European Commissions is proposing a greenhouse gas emissions target for transport. TERM 2011 and future reports aim to deliver an annual assessment on progress towards these targets by introducing the Transport and Environment Reporting Mechanism Core Set of Indicators.

Global policy recommendations on transport have been formulated in the context of the Commission on Sustainable Development and are updated on a periodic basis.   The role of transport in sustainable development and the green economy will also be discussed in the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development  (Rio+20).

The Regional EST Forum for Asia, hosted by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development provides a strategic platform between the governments  of 22 countries in Asia and selected experts who meet periodically to discuss various EST related issues and share best practices/experiences.

The European Commission adopted a roadmap of 40 concrete initiatives for the next decade to build a competitive transport system that will increase mobility, remove major barriers in key areas and fuel growth and employment. At the same time, the proposals will dramatically reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60% by 2050. (more)
