Commission to Discuss Need for Improved and Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport in Developing Countries

New York, 4 May 2010—Without adequate access to sustainable transport infrastructure and fundamental change in transport policies, developing countries will be unable to reduce poverty and meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Transport is one of the topics that will be discussed at the Thematic Interactive Discussion of the United Nations’ 18th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18) on May, 4th 2010.

Bridging the Gap Workshop in Bonn, 8th June

The 2010 Bridging the Gap Workshop Climate Change and Development in the Transport Sector What do we need to achieve GHG mitigation from land transport? invites participants to have a closer look at tackling climate change in the land transport sector. This will include understanding the root causes for today’s climate challenges in the transport sector, what policies are needed both for short-term measures and long-term sustainable land transport in developing countries, and what role various stakeholders play for this in the process.

The workshop is targeted at transport and policy experts, decision-makers in transport and urban planning, practitioners and academics of public policy from Germany, Asia, and beyond. A number of prominent public policy figures and leaders from Asia and the world are invited to address and debate with the audience. The Role of International Partnerships in Promoting Sustainable Transport Solutions

Michael Replogle, Global Policy Director and Founder of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), held a presentation at a thematic seminar about transport at CSD 18 “The Role of International Partnerships in Promoting Sustainable Transport Solutions” and introduced the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT).

Side Event on Getting Transport on Track at CSD 18

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in co-operation with ProgTrans and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), which is a partner of the SLoCaT partnership, invite to a Side Event at the 18th Annual meeting of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18) on Wednesday 12 May 2010 from 1:15 – 2:45 p.m. on “Getting Transport on Track: Global Challenges and Initiatives on Technology Innovation Solutions and Capacity Development”
The event will present the main trends and divers of the global transport development and their impacts and challenges to resolve the problems.
