Tranport at CSD 18 – The conference in New York starts on Monday May 3rd

Sustainable transport is a key issue for sustainable development! The 18th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 18) takes place in New York City from May 3th – 14th, 2010. Transport will be a focus of the CSD 2010/11 cycle. It is a major driving force behind growing world demand for energy and it is one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport organizes a side event on May 4th (10am, room D). Topic will be “Learning Centre: Policy Options for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport”. Agenda will follow.

For those who will be in New York, the GTZ Transport Policy Advisory Service and the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) has prepared an overview of all transport-related events during CSD18 in New York. Download the list of events here.

New US Policy on Reducing Transportation’s Role in GHG emissions

On Earthday, the US Department of Transportation released a Report to Congress, “Transportation’s Role in Reducing U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions,” which evaluates potentially viable strategies to reduce transportation greenhouse gas emissions, as mandated by the Energy Independence and Security Act. This study also examines the potential impact of these strategies on air quality, petroleum savings, transportation goals, costs, and other factors, including various co-benefits and negative impacts.

Is Europe’s transport getting greener? Partly

While technological advances produce cleaner vehicles, more and more passengers and goods are travelling further distances, thereby offsetting efficiency gains. Based on analysis of long-term trends, a new European Environment Agency (EEA) report calls for a clear vision defining Europe’s transport system by 2050 and consistent policies to achieve it.

SLoCaT Membership survey

A Slocat Membership Survey was conducted to find out more about the background of the SLoCaT members, their current activities on sustainable, low carbon transport and what their views were on the future of the SLoCaT Partnership and its acivities. Please find attached an overview of the results of the survey. The results of the survey were discussed at a meeting on 15 March in Seoul by a number of SLoCaT members who were attending the “United Nations Forum on Climate Change Mitigation, Fuel Efficiency and Sustainable Transport” which was organized by UN-DESA, the Korean Energy Economics Institute and the Korean Transport Institute in collaboration with, amongst others, SLoCaT.

It was observed in that meeting that:
