Shaping the Future of Urban Transport

Around 60 participants attended Side Event in COP15 on “Shaping the Future of Urban Transport”. The combined event of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) and the Bridging the Gap Initiative discussed the manner in which a new global climate agreement can assist the developing world in strengthening transport related adaptation and mitigation efforts in their cities. The event contributes to the Partnership of Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport, which was set up in Bangkok in September 2009.

Bus Rapid Transit Project to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions in PRC

Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), will receive a $150 million Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan to help set up a sustainable urban transport system that will reduce transport time and costs, and cut harmful emissions of greenhouse gases.

The ADB Board of Directors approved the loan for the Lanzhou Sustainable Urban Transport Project. The centerpiece will be the establishment of a bus rapid transit system – marking the first ADB project to support an urban mass transport service.

ADB President calls for action on the transport sector

The countries of Asia and the Pacific have a strong stake in a successful outcome to the current climate change talks in Copenhagen, senior officials of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Sunday. ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda pointed to the urgent need for establishing a low-carbon, climate-resilient transport sector. Transport is one of the largest and fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 23% of global carbon dioxide emissions.

Applicability of post 2012 climate instruments to transport

The post 2012 Climate Instruments in the transport sector (CITS) project implemented by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in cooperation with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is a first step to help ensure that the transport sector can benefit from the revised/new climate change mitigation instruments under a post-2012 Climate Change Agreement. The CITS project is a contribution to the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport. A draft report has been published for comments.

CCAP releases transport NAMA proposal

CCAPCCAP released a 2 page summary called “Transportation NAMAs: A Proposed Framework”. They are going to present this as part of their Event “Developing Country Implementation Strategies and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs)” on Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 20:00 to 21:30 in Room 5, Bella Center.
